Buried brass and Fenland bog oak

Just two fields away from my family’s home and farm stands an old hall, steeped in history. One of its most notable moments was the visit of Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War. On his way to Ely with his troops, Cromwell stopped at the hall for the night. Rather than taking the best bedroom, he chose to sleep on the table, remarking that he might have to spend the next night in an open field.
Legend has it that the marks left by his spurs remained visible on the table, and a plaque was later placed there to commemorate the event. I often imagine the farm labourers in the surrounding fields watching in awe as Cromwell and his men rode to the hall.
