Copper, brass and 19th century nails
Diameter: 14cm approx
Depth: 4cm approx

In the past, people hid bent, shiny metal such as nails, spoons and forks in openings of houses (chimneys, doorways and windows) to protect against evil spirits and witches from entering the dwelling.
Having discovered some of these objects whilst renovating my home, I created these pieces drawing on balance and natural forms. These objects contain the energy of the maker – the thickness of the metal causing a physical struggle to create the objects form. This energy is held under constant tension by the nail.
As well as protection, the nail imbues power to the contents of the vessel and the form itself.
