Buried copper and Fenland bog oak

My father told me this story long ago, but the haunting image of its characters has stayed with me. His father, born in the early 1900s, was a young boy walking along the riverbank near Nordelph, hurrying home before dark. It was a bitterly cold winter’s day, the wind howling, the light fading.
He encountered a struggling couple: a man pushing a pram and a woman clutching a baby. The pram contained only a few possessions and was repeatedly getting stuck in the mud. Battling the wind and exhaustion, they were desperately trying to reach the workhouse before nightfall. This bleak and moving picture has always stayed with me, and I have chosen to depict the pram to honor their hardship.
